AZ ready to break the bank for Alves

AZ Alkmaar are negotiating a record-setting €15m bid for last year's Eredivisie top scorer Afonso Alves from Heerenveen.

AZ Alkmaar are ready to launch a breathtaking €15m bid for Heereveen's Brazilian star Afonso Alves, who finished last season in Netherlands as top scorer with 34 goals in 31 matches. Alves is reportedly ready to sign a four-year contract with AZ, although Heereveen refused to lower their initial €20m price on the player, who joined the Dutch side for less than 4 million euros from Swedish side Orebro.

Alves is one of the most besieged players on the final day of the transfer market, as he's being followed by several clubs from Europe's biggest leagues including the likes of Middlesbrough and Napoli. AZ have sold their top scorer Danny Koevermans to PSV for an undisclosed fee, and are willing to use the money to lure Alves to Alkmaar.

AZ bolstered their offensive ranks with Brazilian target man Ari and Italian youngster Graziano Pelle, who recently joined the Dutch club from Serie B side Lecce.
