Reports in the English media suggest that Newcastle United decided to write off €14m Spanish star Albert Luque, who is closing on a return to Spain.
The 29-year-old Spaniard failed to settle in England due to continuous injury problems and has reportedly been written off by new Magpies boss Sam Allardyce. "Big Sam" is willing to release the €14m signing in order to free up approximately 12 million euros in wages as Luque still has three years left on his contract at St. James's Park. The decision to let Luque go is believed to be final, even though the former Deportivo la Coruna forward impressed during preseason preparations.
Reports in Spain suggest that Luque is closing on a switch to Levante, although his wage demands might be a stumbling block to the move since Levante are unlikely to be able to meet Luque €2.5m annual salary.
It is still uncertain whether Newcastle are considering a one-year loan deal with an option of a permanent transfer or releasing the former Spain international forward on a free transfer.
