Apertura 2007: Palermo bags four

Published: 17 September 2007
by Sam Kelly

The weekend was doing quite nicely for goals - twenty in nine matches, with four each in El Monumental and El Cementerio.

But apparently, slightly more than two per game simply isn’t enough for Martín Palermo, who sought to prove manager Miguel Angel Russo’s pronouncement that his side feel at home in any stadium correct by banging in four of his own as Boca hit Banfield for six in El Sur. Huracán saw off San Martín in the clash of the newly promoted sides.

Primera División Apertura 2007, ninth round:

Gimnasia y Esgrima de Jujuy (H. Silvera 90+3; D. Ramasco OFF 90+2) 1 - 1 Argentinos Juniors (A. Pereira 55)

Colón de Santa Fé (G. Rodríguez OG 41) 1 - 3 Independiente (C. Matheu 21; G. Denis 35, 61)

Olimpo de Bahía Blanca (G. Pinto OFF 77) 0 - 0 Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata
Estudiantes de La Plata (L. Benítez 78) 1 - 1 Arsenal de Sarandí (J. Ulloa 90+2)

Huracán (L. Varaldo 41; C. Sanchez Prette 64) 2 - 1 San Martín de San Juan (J. Brusco 69)

Racing Club (L. Avalos 90+1) 1 - 0 Vélez Sársfield

Newell’s Old Boys 0 - 1 Rosario Central (M. Arzuaga 73; G. Núñez OFF 40; E. Papa OFF 46)

San Lorenzo de Almagro (S. Hirsig 20; N. Silvera 55) 2 - 1 Tigre (L. Lázzaro 64)

River Plate (F. Belluschi 43, 77; A. Sánchez 46) 3 - 1 Lanús (J. Sand 67; W. Ribonetto OFF 90+1)

Banfield 0 - 6 Boca Juniors (M. Palermo 6, 21, 27, 48; L. Gracián 37; P. Ledesma 80)

After nine rounds, Boca top the table with 19 points. Independiente are level with them. River are third on 15, Vélez have the same tally and Argentinos, Lanús, Arsenal and Tigre are all on 14. Central’s win in the Rosario derby finally lifts them off the bottom slot - Olimpo are now at the foot of the table on 6, with Central on 7 and Gimnasia de Jujuy on 9. San Martín are on 10 and San Lorenzo, Newell’s, Gimnasia La Plata and Estudiantes all on 11.
