Wolfsburg Iran-born player Ashkan Dejagah stirred a lot of controversy in Germany by withdrawing from a match against Isreal for political reasons.
21-year old Wolfsburg midfielder has asked to be withdrawn from the squad to face Israel, as Iranian rules prevent Iranians to step on the Israeli ground. His request caused a lot of controversy and complaints from country's Jewish communities which asked the German FA to drop Dejagah from the national team for good. The head of the FA Theo Zwanziger revealed he had a meeting with the player and said that after the conversation he decided Dejagah will still be considered as a member of the squad: "Ashkan Dejagah has assured us that, due to his Iranian background, he was exclusively concerned with the well-being of his family," Zwanzinger said in a statement after the meeting.
"He stressed... that there were no racist or anti-Semitic reasons."
Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran has refused to recognise Israel's right to exist and Iranian citizens are forbidden from travelling to Israel.
