Atletico Madrid coach Javier Aguirre claimed that he was not blocking the transfer of Juan Roman Riquelme, despite the allegations in Spanish press.
Reports in Spanish media suggested that Javier Aguirre was not fond of signing Argentine star Juan Roman Riquelme from Villarreal, as it was believed that the Mexican prefers to use two wingers instead of a player of Riquelme's characteristics. Aguirre himself denied the stories and claimed that Riquelme was not signed as the club ran out of time and had already all 4 non-EU spots covered: "I wanted this transfer. Problem was that we already have 4 non-EU players and as we only had two days left to complete the transfer, we ran out of time," Aguirre told Spanish daily AS.
