Scottish Friendly Weekend Round-Up

Published: 29 July 2007
by Marcus Furtwangler

Barca shine in the Edinburgh sun, as bumper Scottish weekend sees Rangers and Falkirk complete impressive victories over Chelsea and Ajax.

HEARTS 1:3 FC BARCELONA
19 [0:1] Ronaldinho (pen)
24 [1:1] Makela
40 [1:2] Ronaldinho
50 [1:3] Dos Santos

Hearts: Gordon: Karpidis, Zaliukas, Berra, Wallace; Tall; Makela, Stewart, Kingston, Ksanavicius; Velicka. Subs: Banks, Neilson, McCann, McGowan, Jonsson, Beniusis, Mikoliunas, Ivaskevicius, Palazuelos, Pospisil, Elliot.

Barcelona: Valdes: Zambrotta, Sylvinho, Thuram, Oleguer: Xavi, Toure, Iniesta: Ronaldinho, Ezquerro, Eto'o. Subs: Belletti, Motta, Crosas, Valiente, Maxi Lopez, Delgado, Henry, Olmo, Bojan, Dos Santos, Deco, Abidal, Jorquera, Olazabel.

57,857 fans at Murrayfield Stadium welcomed Hearts and FC Barcelona, with the Catalan side in a slightly higher gear than was witnessed during Wednesday’s late win over Dundee United. This huge crowd was one of the largest ever witnessed for a game of football in the Scottish capital. Early chances for the visitors were spurned, Ronaldinho being denied by some good goalkeeping from Craig Gordon, while Samuel Eto’o somehow contrived to head over the bar from close-range. But it was only delaying the inevitable, as Hearts conceded a penalty, converted effortlessly by the Brazilian icon. After a somewhat comical delay, due to an over-excited fan offering Eto’o and Ronaldinho a scarf and hat, Hearts equalised - Finn Juho Makela causing genuine delight among the large crowd. Ronaldinho somewhat spoiled the party mood, his header leaving Gordon helpless and earning a 2-1 half time lead for Barcelona.

That lead was extended soon after the interval, after a lovely cutback from Thierry Henry saw Dos Santos find the net in 50 minutes. The second period lacked the excitement of the first, with the home side struggling to get back into the match, although it was punctuated by the odd flash of inspiration and brilliance: Henry once again showing what a fabulous acquisition he is likely to be for the Spanish side, as he struck the post and maintained a constant threat to the home goal. The 3-1 result was a fair reflection on events, and a great opportunity for football fans to witness some true quality in the flesh.
