The first leg of the Champions League 2nd Qualifying Round when largely according to plan. The main surprise of note was Bosnian champion FK Sarajevo's 2-1 win at Belgian club Genk. Veldin Muharemović netted the winner in the 86th minute.
Bulgarian club Levski Sofia, group stage entrants in last season's Champions league, fell 1-0 at Finnish club Tampere United while Turkish giants Beşiktaş could only scrounge a 1-0 home win over Sheriff Tiraspol of Moldova. Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade won at home by the single goal against Estonians Levadia Tallinn and Red Bull Salzburg powered to a 3-0 win at Latvian champions Ventspils.
