Roma admit Chivu talks

Roma sporting director Daniele Prade confirmed that he has held negotiations with Barcelona's director Txiki Begiristain regarding the sale of Romanian defender Cristian Chivu.

Romanian was recently linked to Inter switch, but it appears that capital club prefers to sell the talented defender to Spanish giants Barcelona. Barcelona already made an inquiry for Chivu last summer and is ready to step up the interest following the latest news regarding Carles Puyol's knee injury, that will keep by the sidelines for a period between three and six months. Barcelona made Chivu as one of the priority signings before the new season, since its been widely speculated that Catalans desperately need to refresh the ageing backline: "“It was a positive meeting, although only a preliminary one,” noted the Giallorossi official this afternoon. There are no reasons to be optimistic nor pessimistic and we will meet with them again next week. They are a serious outfit and are interested in the player, but they have not presented an offer. This meeting proves that there are no negotiations underway with Inter,” concluded Pradè.

Chivu's departure seems certain after the club signed Brazilian defender Juan from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth estimated €4.5m.
