DC United Stadium Deal Dead

Published: 24 July 2007
by Extra Football

After nearly three years of intensive efforts it appears that DC United's plan to build a stadium at the Poplar Point location on the Anacostia River is dead.

The club have worked with the city of Washington, DC, the Federal Government and a variety of local leaders and groups to get everything into place for the stadium plan. But these efforts look to have collapsed according to an article in Saturday's Washington Post.

The club planned to finance construction of the stadium itself but requested up to $200 million in additional subsidies for additional development. It appears that this was too large of a concession for the city, especially given the $600 million plus it recently spent on the city's new baseball stadium, scheduled to open in 2008.

The club will now pursue other options within the region as it hopes to build a stadium of its own and leave aging RFK Stadium, once home to the NFL's Washington Redskins. A comprehensive project, including office and retail, is a priority for the club's ownership, which includes real estate developer Victor MacFarlane.

MLS Stadium Round-Up:

New York - The Red Bulls continue construction on a new stadium in suburban Harrison, New Jersey, scheduled to open during the 2008 season. The Red Bull organization is also reportedly buying out the 50% stake that previous club owners AEG own in the stadium project.

Salt Lake - Working on a site in suburban Sandy, Utah. Target opening - 2009 season. They recently opened a practice facility on the campus of club sponsor XanGo.

Houston - the club are targeting a downtown location, possibly near the Minute Maid Park baseball ground. The price tag is expected to be in the $70-80 million range and they hope for an official announcement in September.

Kansas City - continue to look for a location for a 22,000-seat stadium + retail project. One possibility is the old (and now unused) Bannister Mall location.

San Jose - The returning Earthquakes are targeting a location near San Jose International Airport. No real details beyond that at this point.

New England - No announced plans on the horizon. It seems a low priority considering that the Kraft Group owns the Revs, Gillette Stadium and their co-tenants the NFL New England Patriots.
