Eredivisie preview: Coming to the climax

Published: 27 April 2007
by Walter Holleman

Dutch Eredivisie is approaching its end with three teams battling for the title. Leaders PSV from Eindhoven will host Vitesse Arnheim, while AZ and Ajax are facing tough fixtures away to Excelsior and Willem II respectively.

After throwing away an 11 point lead and leading for most of the season, PSV draw last week away against FC Utrecht has given AZ its biggest chance of grabbing the league title with only just one matchday left in the regular season. Three sides currently stand at the top with goal difference separating AZ (+53) from Ajax (+47) and PSV (+46).

Sunday sees AZ travel to Excelsior, a side which has managed to hold Ajax and PSV to draws this season, but which also at the same time has nothing to play for as their loss last Sunday away against Heracles makes it impossible for them to get out of the relegation play-off spots. AZ, in contrast to their dodgy record against the bigger sides in the league, have a good record against the minnows in Dutch football so it’d be a shock were AZ not to comfortably beat Excelsior to grab their first eredivisie title since 1981.

Ajax travel to Willem II with the knowledge beforehand that they’ll have to score six goals more than AZ to have any hope of winning the league. Most probably a bridge too far but Willem II too won’t have anything to play for after they assured themselves of safety last week so a big scoreline is expected but Willem II on the other hand aren’t such a bad side that the expectation is that they’ll lose by double figures.
