Without doubt, Germany’s most talked about football event of all times is the miraculous 3:2 victory over Hungary in the 1954 World Championships final in Switzerland. This rainy 4th of July holds for many Germans the meaning of some kind of resurrection of the death.
The Miracle of Bern
After World War II, the Germans struggled to forget their horrible past and created another miracle, the so called “Economy Miracle” of the 1950’s. Just during that period of Germany’s economic comeback to the top, the “Miracle of Bern” represented a powerful symbol, which contained a meaning that holds until now: the Germans never give up, even if their opponents are far better than themselves. And indeed, Hungary’s 1954 team was full with internationally admired football artists and most definitely one of the best football squads ever seen on the planet until then. Names like Sandor Kocsis, Zoltan Czibor, Jószef Bozsik and above all of course Ferenc Puskás were known across the world. This all too mighty opponent defeated the Germans in the first round of the tournament with 8:3 and when the teams met again in the final, it was just a matter of how many goals Hungary will score, according to the public opinion. But something happened on this 4th of July, which consolidated a whole myth around Germany as a football nation. It was the myth of the fighting Germans, with not much talent, but with strong will power and the desire to survive the most sophisticated opponent by running, tackling, discipline and team spirit. The Germans showed to the rest of the world, that even if you don’t have great footballers in your ranks, you can defeat any other team. Or with other words: Don’t ever ever ever give up !
