Getafe: When teamwork becomes a virtue

Published: 10 June 2007
by Diego Sanchez

Four years ago nobody in Getafe even dared to think that a local team will be playing in the strongest Spanish league, in Primera Division. Today there are not many who claim that humble Getafe is the biggest surprise of this year’s season.

Getafe is a small town with some more then 150.000 inhabitants at the south edge of Comunidad de Madrid. The city is known as a sleeping settlement where most of the inhabitants are from a working class but at the same time it's famous also for being a cradle of spanish aviation. Getafe was dubbed also "the capital of south Madrid" because it's developing really fast and it's every year closer to join the real Spanish capital. The big step towards the town's progress contributed also the new established university of Carlos III which brought to the city a lot of joy and hope for a more exciting future.

Four years ago nobody in Getafe even dared to think that a local team will be playing in the strongest Spanish league, in Primera Division. Today there are not many who claim that humble Getafe is the biggest surprise of this year’s season. On the grounds of hard work, patience and modesty Getafe performs for the third successive year in Liga de las Estrellas (stars league) and the future of this club seems to be better then it was ever before. This season they managed to get to the finals of Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) and in the championship they are persistently approaching the places that would assure them the presence in the European Cups.

The story needs to be told from the start – with the president of the club Angel Torres who was also the project manager. Club's direction made a clear plan and waited patiently for results; they were also trying to make the team as competitive and as good as possible for the hard matches in La Liga. The giants of the Spanish football didn't exactly help them with the project – the club had to face constant transfers of his players into the stronger teams. Can you imagine what a hard job before the start of this season was facing the club, that has one of the smallest budgets in spanish football, and that lost four of his key players in the summer transfer window. The forward Riki went to Deportivo, the newborn Spanish national player with Argentinean roots Mario Pernia went to Atletico, after one year spend on a loan, Francisco Gavilan - the second debutant of the Furia jersey, had to return to Valencia. With all that departures, we can only congratulate Getafe for its success.
