Big-spending Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid clinched progress in the Uefa Cup after a hard-working 1-0 win over Gloria Bistrita.
Atletico Madrid lost the first leg in Romania and needed a victory in order to qualify for the Uefa Cup first round. The Spanish giants took the lead in the 10th minute after Uruguayan Diego Forlan scored his first goal since moving to Atletico from Villarreal. Despite Atletico's domination home fans trembled until the final whistle as Gloria caused a lot of pressure on the Spanish club in the second half. Another Romania club, Otelul Galati, surprisingly eliminated Turkish side Trabzonspor while Blackburn, Sampdoria and Lens had already done most of the job in the first leg ties.
