Juventus refused to increase the bid for Zaragoza's defender Gabriel Milito and have switched their interest to Stuttgart's Portuguese defender Fernando Meira.

29-year old Stuttgart's skipper was influential in this year's Stuttgart's title bid and helped the Swabian club clinch the Bundesliga after more than 15 years. Former Benfica defender has been targeted by Serie B champions Juventus, after Turin giants quit the chase for highly-rated Zaragoza Argentine internationalGabriel Milito. Meira has reportedly expressed a desire to join Juventus: "The interest of these big clubs is there. That is all i can say. It would be an honour to play in Italy next season, the same would apply to Spain. If the club had the wish to sell me, then i would definitely go," Meira told.

Juventus are stepping up the chase to sign a new central defender to fill the gap following Robert Kovač's departure to Borussia Dortmund. According to the reports in Italian media, Juve have also inquired Benfica about Brazilian defender Luisao.
