Thai prosecutors in London for Thaksin extradition

Published: 16 October 2007

Thai prosecutors are due to arrive in London to investigate the possibility of extraditing Manchester City owner Thaksin Shinawatra on corruption charges.

Former Thai prime minister, whose bank accounts have been frozen in Thailand, has been living in exile after the military coup in September last year ended his reign. The new Manchester City owner, who invested nearly 82 million pounds to buy out the Premiership club, has been accused of several charges in Thailand. One relates to an alleged conflict of interest in a €15m million land deal which was bought by only one third of the estimated value.

If convicted of any crime +Thaksin could be barred from owning a Premiership football club. Shinawatra has become a highly controversial figure in the English football and his arrival caused a lot of protests questioning his past and his moral right for the involvement in football.

Thaksin has repeatedly denied the charges, claiming they are politically motivated
