Sevilla started the season with a fantastic display at the Santiago Bernabeu in a 5-3 win against Real Madrid to take the Spanish Super Cup.
Sevilla claimed the annual trophy, which pits the league champion against the Copa del Rey winner, by a 6-3 aggregate score, having won last week's first leg 1-0. Brazilian midfielder Renato opened the scoring from close range in the 17th minute after Christian Poulsen took advantage of a parry by Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas to fire the ball across goal.
Madrid's recent signing from Feyenoord, Netherlands U-21 international Royston Drenthe, equalized in spectacular fashion with a fierce long-range shot which hit the underside of the bar and bounced over the line seven minutes later.
Renato then doubled his tally in the 29th with a glancing header from Sergio Duda's cross.
The home team's plight worsened in the 38th when Kanoute, who missed the first leg through suspension, converted his spot kick after Pepe's handball.
The fifth goal of the first half arrived in the 45th minute when the unmarked Cannavaro ran in to meet an outswinging cross from Netherlands midfielder Wesley Sneijder, who joined Madrid from Ajax last week. Sergio Ramos, a former Sevilla defender, pulled Madrid level with a 78th-minute header from a free kick by substitute Jose Maria "Guti" Gutierrez.
Right back Daniel Alves, whose transfer to Chelsea last week was halted when the clubs failed to agree on a fee, helped Sevilla restore its lead in the 82nd minute with a low cross which Kanoute slid home. The Mali international completed his hat trick in injury time from a cross by substitute Enzo Maresca.
