Serie A clubs have become the third biggest spenders in Europe this summer, after 20 clubs invested 368.4 million euros in reinforcements.
This year's amount almost doubles the expenditure from 2006/07 season which was hugely impacted by the demotion of Juventus and match-fixing scandal. Juventus led the way with 57 million euros, followed by Roma (34.4m), Inter (31.9m) and AC Milan who had a quiet summer spending mere 26.8m euros mostly contributed to the purchase of Brazilian youngster Alexandre Pato from Internacional Porto Alegre for 22m euros. 18-year old Brazilian was at the same time also the most expensive newcomer in Italy, while several clubs balanced their books by off-loading the key players.
Many Serie A's top scorers last summer have moved abroad with Luca Toni joining Bayern Munich, Claudio Lucarelli moving to Shakhtar Donetsk, Reggina's target man Rolando Bianchi to Manchester City and Claudio Rigano sealing a switch to Primera Division outfit Levante.
