Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Württemberg state (pop. 11 million) is located in the center of the very densely populated southwestern so-called "Neckar Region" of Germany, close to both the Black Forest and the Swabian Alb. The city center (situated in a lush valley, ringed with vineyards and forests, close to the river Neckar) has a population of approximately 600.000. Stuttgart's metropolitan area includes the nearby cities of Ludwigsburg, Böblingen, Esslingen, Waiblingen, Göppingen and their respective districts.

The "Swabian Metrople" is the sixth largest city in Germany and the Stuttgart Region is the nation's fourth largest metropolitan area (behind Ruhr Area, Rhein/Main Area and Berlin). The Stuttgart region is therefore mostly re-knowned for being a stronghold of the German economy. Around 150,000 companies are located here. The area is known for its car and high-tech industry; some of its most prominent companies include DaimlerChrysler, Porsche, Bosch, Celesio, Hewlett-Packard and IBM all of whom located their world or German headquarters here.

Famously, Stuttgart is the place where the motorbike and the four-wheeled automobile were invented by Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz, who were both born in the Stuttgart region. Stuttgart is hence the starting point of the worldwide automotive industry. Such famous and prestigious brands as Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Maybach are produced here.
