Valencia

Being Spain’s third largest city and the ‘capital of the Mediterranean’, Valencia has a lot to offer to anyone wishing to visit, with a host of new developments combined with the historic preface of the city and the surrounding areas making it the best destination in Spain at the present time.

Capital city of the Comunidad Valenciana (Valencian autonomous region), Valencia has around 800,000 inhabitants in the city itself, but the surrounding regions and towns comprise of around 1.8 million people.

Estimates have the founding of the city by The Romans at around 138 BC, and since then has been the focal point of many wars and battles, giving it the historical value that makes the city so unique. These historical sites that must be seen are explored later, along with the great cultural aspects and modern developments which have turned Valencia into such a hub of excitement.

Once one of Spain’s most important industrial cities, the 1990s saw great economic growth for the city, transforming it into a place of great cultural and touristic opportunities.

Though not as fiercely passionate as the Catalans or Basques, the Valencian people still take great pride in their region, as shown by the festivities of Las Fallas and the display of the Senyera, the Valencian flag, on almost every street in the city.

As well as the city, the Valencian region, comprising of small towns placed upon hillsides, scenic fishing villages and fields of orange trees, is one of the most beautiful in Spain. Not to mention the fantastic beaches stretching up and down the coastline, the dried Turia river which is now a series stunning gardens and the Albufera national park.

In short, Valencia is the place to be.
