Vienna

Nightlife, Food, Drinking

Viennese cuisine
Vienna is well known for Wiener Schnitzel, bread crumbed and fried veal escalope, frequently served with Erdäpfel Salat, a delicious side dish made from potatoes. Other examples of Viennese cuisine include "Tafelspitz" (Choice pieces of boiled beef with classic garnishes), Kaiserschmarn (a legend says that this dessert of shredded pancake and stewed fruit was invented for Emperor Franz Joseph).Vienna has a long tradition of cakes and desserts, like Apfelstrudel (hot apple strudel), Knödel (dumplings) and Vanillekipferl. A dry chocolate cake with apricot jam from the Sacher Hotel, Sachertorte is a world famous dessert. Sausages are also popular and available from street vendors all night through. The sausage known as Wiener (German for "Viennese") in the USA and Germany is however called a Frankfurter. You can find extensive information on the wide variety of restaurants in Vienna here.

Drinking
There are a lot of pubs and bars for the young scene in the so-called “Grätzel” (district quarters). The so called "Bermuda Triangle" of bars and pubs in Vienna is the city's most popular draw, and stretches between Schwedenplatz, the Hohermarkt and Morzinplatz. Vienna is the world's only capital city with its own vineyards (although Paris also has one). The wine is served in small Viennese pubs known as Heuriger. The wine is often drunk as a spritzer ("G'spritzter") with sparkling water. The Grüner Veltliner, a white wine, is the most widely cultivated wine in Austria. Beer is also of a big importance. Vienna has a single large brewery, Ottakringer, and more than ten microbreweries. A "Beisl" is a typical small Austrian pub; you can find many of them in Vienna.

Viennese cafés
Viennese cafés have an extremely long and distinguished history that dates back centuries and fine coffeehouse tradition has existed for well-over 300 years. Viennese cafés claim to have invented the process of filtering coffee from bounty captured after the second Turkish siege in 1683. Julius Meinl set up a modern roasting plant. Nowadays, of course, locals and overseas travelers alike take coffee in Vienna's most famous, and best loved establishments (such as the Hotel Sacher and Demel), simply to enjoy their delightful turn-of-the-19th-century charm and elegance. A café is the best place to relax, enjoy and read the newspaper. In these venerable old institutions, artists, poets and writers look for inspiration. Of all the classic Viennese coffee houses, check out Café Sperl (Gumpendorfer Strasse 11), Café Prückel (Stubenring 24), Café Sacher (Philharmonikerstrasse 4) or K&K Hofzuckerbäckerei Demel Kohlmarkt 14, 1010 Vienna. Coffee, however, is far superior at the renovated 1950s Espresso (Burggasse 57).

Nightlife
Vienna offers a varied nightlife with a lot of clubs and bars for every music taste, so there is no need to go to bed, but many reasons to stay up all night. Dancing and “chilling” of the highest quality - after all, Vienna’s electronic music scene is world-renowned. And clubs such as Flex at the Danube Canal were selected as one of the best locations worldwide. In the centre, the tiny Adolf Loos-designed American Bar (Kärtnerdurchgang, 512 3283) is great for cocktails and Porgy & Bess (Riemergasse 11, 512 8811) is Vienna’s best jazz joint.
