Organised club football began in Germany as early as 1900, however the first national competition didn’t come into being until 1933. After World War 2, with Germany occupied and divided, leagues in West and East Germany arose, but were fairly weak in comparison to other European competitions. German club football really got going with the inauguration of the Bundesliga in 1963. Since their promotion to the top-flight in 1966, Bayern Munich have dominated the competition, winning 19 of 40 national championships.
3 German clubs have won Europe’s highest honour, the European Cup/Champions League. These are Hamburger SV, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. In total, German clubs have won this competition 6 times and finished runners-up 7 times.
In the UEFA cup, 5 separate German clubs have won the trophy. These are Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen, Schalke 04, Borussia Munchengladbach and Eintracht Frankfurt. In total, German clubs have won the cup 6 times.
Like all leagues, Germany has many rivalries and derbies. Some of the most famous include the Ruhr derby between Schalke and Borussia Dortmund and the Munich derby between Bayern and 1860 Munich.
