Premier League

England boasts a long and illustrious history in club football. The rules for the modern game were first codified in London in 1863, whilst the first ever league began there in 1888.

Throughout the 20th century, the English league has remained one of the strongest in Europe, spawning 4 separate European Cup/Champions League winning teams – Manchester United, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa, winning the competition 10 times in total.

In the UEFA Cup, English teams have also done well, winning the competition 10 times and being runners up 8 times. 7 English clubs have won the competition – Ipswich, Newcastle United, Arsenal, Tottenham, Leeds United and Liverpool.
During a remarkable period of domination from 1974-1985, English clubs appeared in 8 out of the 11 European Cup finals, winning an astonishing 7 of them before English clubs were barred from European competition for 5 years in 1985 in the aftermath of the Heysel tragedy.

In 1992, the Premier League was formed by the clubs of the First division, marking a new era of professionalism and an increasingly commercialised game.

Domestically, the English league plays host to a number of fierce rivalries, including the Merseyside Derby between Liverpool and Everton, the North-London Derby between Tottenham and Arsenal and the Manchester Derby between Manchester United and Manchester City.
