Serie A

Organised club Football in Italy began in 1898. An Englishman, James Richardson Spensley had introduced the game two years earlier, founding the Genoa Cricket and Football Club, which went on to become a part of the new league, winning it in 6 of the first 7 seasons.

From its introduction, the teams competed in regional groupings. In 1929 the league was reorganised into its now familiar Serie A format, with teams competing in a national competition. During the 20th century, Italy has produced 3 separate winners of the European Cup/Champions League – A.C. Milan, F.C. Internazionale and Juventus F.C., winning the competition 10 times in total.

Italian teams have also won the UEFA Cup 10 times and finished runners-up 8 times. The 5 separate Italian competition winners are Napoli, Roma, Parma, Inter and Juventus.

Italian football also plays host to some of the fiercest rivalries in club football. Some of these include the Derby della Madonnina between Inter and AC Milan, the Derby della Capitale between Roma and Lazio and Derby Della Lanterna between Sampdoria and Genoa.
