Details:
Genoa were founded by English immigrants on September 7, 1893, with no Italians admitted until 1897. Genoa are the oldest existing club in Italy. The club were originally formed to play cricket, a football section was not started until 1896. The club’s original uniforms were all-white, similar to the national team of the club’s founders. They adopted their trademark red and blue shirts in 1901. The Grifoni nickname is a reference to the Griffon found on the club's emblem. The 1929-45 name change to Genova was a change forced upon the club by the Fascist government of the time, who disapproved of 'foreign' names.
