Details:

Before adopting the name Manchester City the club were founded as West Gorton (St Marks) by members of the St Marks Church in West Gorton, a neighborhood of Manchester. Briefly merged with Gorton Athletic, then renamed to Gorton AFC after the breakup of the merger. Moved to the neighborhood of Ardwick in 1887, resulting in another name change to Ardwick FC. Financial problems in 1894 led to a reorganization and their current name. Manchester City’s emblem includes an eagle and ship, both symbols of the city of Manchester, as well as the club's motto - Superbia in Proelio (Pride in Battle).
