Details:

Formed in 1878 as Newton Heath (L&YR) FC - the works team of Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath, a neighborhood of Manchester. In 1880 the club became independent of the railway and changed their name to simply Newton Heath to reflect that. A new owner took control in 1902, prompting the name change to Manchester United. The club have the nickname The Red Devils, which actually goes back to the Manchester rugby club Salford, who were given the nickname Les Diables Rouges (The Red Devils) during an unbeaten 1934 tour of France. It was later adopted by supprters of Manchester United for their own similarly colored club. The club's emblem includes a Red Devil and the ship found in the city of Manchester coat of arms. The stadium is near the Old Trafford cricket ground, Trafford being a neighborhood of Manchester.
