Details:
Formed in April 1898 as a successor to the locally popular Royal Artillery club who had been suspended by the FA. The club's nickname - Pompey - is the nickname of the city of Portsmouth. This is likely a reference to the time Portsmouth-based sailors scaled Pompey's Pillar in Alexandria, Egpyt although there are a variety of other explanations. The star and crescent of the club's emblem are also the symbols of the city of Portsmouth. Joined the Football League in 1920 when the Third Division was created..Fratton Park stadium is named for the neighborhood in which it is located.
