Details:

Formed by the 1946 merger of Sampierdarenese and Andrea Doria, the name Sampdoria being a merger of those two names. Andrea Doria were founded in 1895, the name a tribute to a Genoan naval hero and politician of the 16th century. The club was forcibly merged with Sampierdarenese and Corniglianese to create La Dominante in 1927. The Fascist government of this time encouraged a number of mergers at this time to create a single team from each major city, Napoli and Fiorentina being other prominent examples. However Andrea Doria was reformed in 1931 and continued until the creation of Sampdoria in 1946. Sampierdarenese were founded 1901, the name a reference to the Sampierdarena neighborhood of western Genoa. Merged with FBC Liguria in 1919 and later with Andrea Doria and Corniglianese in 1927 to create La Dominante. A new Sampierdarenese was created in 1932. Merged with Rivarolese and Corniglianese in 1938 to create AC Liguria. Ended merger and became Sampierdarenese again in 1945. The club's uniforms incorporate the colors of the two merged clubs, the national team's blue and the cross of St George (coat of arms of the city of Genova) at is center.
