Details:

Formed as Sunderland & District Teachers Association by a group of teachers at the Hendon Boarding School. After a year the club allowed non-teachers to join and changed the name so Sunderland Association Football Club. The club's elaborate emblem includes - a pithead wheel (symbolic of the region's mining heritage), the club's red and white colors, two famous city symbols (Penshaw Monument and Victorian Wearmouth Bridge) and a pair of lions (also prominent in the city's coat of arms). Their Stadium of Light was named as a tip of the hat to the industrial heritage of the region, specifically the Monkwearmouth mine. A sign at the mine's exit famously read 'Into The Light'.
