Wigan Athletic were formed at a public meeting at the Queen's Hall in May 1932, out of the ashes of Wigan Borough, who resigned from the Football League in 1931. Before 2003, Wigan had never played above the 3rd level of English football. Joined the Football League in 1978. Their nickname – Latics - is a linguistic corruption of Athletic. Wigan Athletic's emblem is based on that of the city of Wigan. The stadium is named for JJB, an athletics apparel company based in Wigan. the club sponsor and the company of the club's owner. Previous stadium - Springfield Park (1932-99).
